British singer-songwriter Jess Glynne has been singing since childhood, always particularly inspired by soul music. At the age of five she used to sing Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston songs and was influenced by Amy Winehouse, whose album Frank inspired Jess to pursue a career in music. Unfortunately, at the start, she was rejected from the UK X-Factor when she auditioned for the show at 15 years old.
After completing her high school exams, she spent a few years working various jobs and got her first taste of the professional music world after starting work for a management company. A few years later, with experience working behind the scenes and networking with the right people, Jess realized she needed to take a step forward in her own musical aspirations. She took a music course for a year in London, where she met the people with whom she would later collaborate, including Jin Jin, who co-wrote Hold My Hand.
After lending her vocals to music around the UK, Jess caught the ear of Clean Bandit. Now you might recognize her as the vocals behind their worldwide hit Rather Be.
While she followed up that song with two of her own (Right Here, Home) in her native UK, Hold My Hand is her first No. 1 UK song. It’s about having someone there to make you feel comfortable and safe and to see the light at the end of the tunnel when things aren’t going so great, and it was written when she was going through something just like that.
Jess Gynne’s debut album will be released in the US this fall.
Fun Fact: Jess and her band love donuts so much that when they do their usual pre-show ritual, they end it by chanting “donuts … donuts … DONUTS!” She also loves horseback riding and had a few horses growing up.
