John Mellencamp, a cultural icon and one of the most acclaimed singers of his generation, celebrates his 64th birthday today. Although he’s gone by a variety of names over the years — from Johnny Cougar to John Cougar to John Cougar Mellencamp to John Mellencamp – he’s remained the voice of the everyman throughout his career, documenting the joys and struggles of ordinary life.
