The 147th running of the Belmont Stakes takes place Saturday, June 6th, and a chance at history is on the line.
American Pharoah, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, will run against nine other horses in an attempt to become horse racing’s first Triple Crown winner since 1978.
As of Monday morning, American Pharoah is the favorite to win, carrying 5-to-6 odds. Frosted (11-to-2) and Materiality (13-to-2) are expected to be American Pharoah’s chief competition.
SiriusXM will have live coverage of the race from Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., on SiriusXM Sports Zone (channel 92) starting Saturday at 8 am ET. Listeners will hear the Belmont undercard stakes at 2 pm ET, and the live call of the Belmont Stakes via NBC Sports Radio, produced in partnership with HRRN and Westwood One, starts at 5 pm ET. Post time for the race is approximately 6:50 pm ET.
Affirmed is the last horse to take home horse racing’s Triple Crown. At the time, it was the sport’s third Triple Crown in six years – Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown in 1977, and Secretariat in 1973.
Since 1978, 13 horses have won both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, but fallen short at Belmont. That includes six horses since 2002 – War Emblem, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones, Big Brown, I’ll Have Another and California Chrome. Smarty Jones came the closest of that group to winning at Belmont, but finished second to Birdstone.
All week at 6 am ET, SiriusXM listeners can also hear At The Races with Steve Byk, daily from 6-10 am ET on Sirius channel 220, XM channel 206 and channel 964 on the SiriusXM app.
