Mick Kern from NHL Network Radio here. We’re running down the must-hear NHL games of the week, including Boston at Chicago, and Vancouver at Anaheim!
Saturday, March 10th – Pittsburgh Penguins at Toronto Maple Leafs
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91
This matchup would make for a great Eastern Conference Final, though both teams will have their work cut out for them just to get through their respective divisions. The Penguins are in the midst of a battle for first place in the Metropolitan Division, while the Maple Leafs are trying to catch Boston for second slot in the Atlantic.
Sunday, March 11th – Boston Bruins at Chicago Blackhawks
12:30 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91
Those Bruins are in Chicago for a Sunday matinee; a tale of two teams heading in opposite directions. Boston were the hottest team in the league, until have recently had to contend with injuries to key players. Forward Patrice Bergeron has battled the injury bug, and rookie defenceman Charlie McAvoy is expected to be lost to the team for a minimum of four weeks. As for Chicago, most likely they’ll miss the post-season after being a lock to participate the past decade.
Monday, March 12th – Vegas Golden Knights at Philadelphia Flyers
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 220
The story of the season (Vegas) arrives in Philadelphia to face a Flyers team who are also writing quite a story this season. Philadelphia are a legitimate contender for first place in the Metropolitan Division, which only the most die-hard Flyers’ fan would have thought possible this season. Of course, the expansion Golden Knights continue to amaze people, and will be in the playoffs in their first season in the NHL.
Tuesday, March 13th – Winnipeg Jets at Nashville Predators
8:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 221
Quite the rivalry brewing between these two Central Division teams. Back of February 27th, the Preds prevailed in a tight, exciting 6-5 win over Winnipeg. At this point, it looks like Nashville will grab first place in the Central, with the Jets finished second. If Winnipeg wishes to change that dynamic, they’ll have to begin tonight.
Wednesday, March 14th – Vancouver Canucks at Anaheim Ducks
10:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91
While the Canucks are going to watch the playoffs from their couches, again, the Ducks have everything to play for. They could finish as high as second in the Pacific Division, they could be a Western wild card team, or they could just miss the post-season cut.
Thursday, March 15th – Washington Capitals at New York Islanders
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 219
The Islanders most likely won’t be in the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs, and the question then is, how will this affect the likelihood of star centre John Tavares re-signing with the team. As for the Capitals, they find themselves once again in a battle for first place in the Metropolitan Division, though they’ll be judged by how they perform in the post season…like every other team, but particularly so for the Caps, who have come up short in the playoffs far too many times.
Friday, March 16th – Dallas Stars at Ottawa Senators
7:30 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 219
You might have had these two teams meeting in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final when you sat down to make your predictions back In September. After all, the Sens were one goal away from being in the 2017 Cup Final, and many prognosticators fell in love with Dallas after a busy summer. The reality is, Ottawa has taken a number of steps backwards this season, and will miss the post-season. The Stars took a while to get going, and now are in the playoff mix.
