What is considered country music?

  • Acceptable musical genres that SiriusXM is seeking include: Country, Rock-Country, Honky-Tonk, Alternative-Country, and Bluegrass.

I’m a solo act, do I qualify?

  • Yes, SiriusXM is seeking bands and solo artists.
  • Eligible artists must be Canadian citizens.
  • Solo artists are responsible for sourcing their own band, if required. A maximum of five (5) band members including the solo artist are permitted.
  • Eligible artists must showcase music in English.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have been previously nominated for a JUNO Award or a Polaris Music Prize.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have previously won a Canadian Country Music Association Award.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have been previously nominated for a Canadian Country Music Association Award in any of the following categories: Male Artist of the Year, Female Artist of the Year, Group or Duo of the Year, Fan’s Choice, Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Video of the Year, Roots Artist or Group of the Year.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have previously participated in the Canadian Country Music Association New Artist Showcase or Canadian Country Music Association Discovery Program as a performer. An individual performing artist who has previously been selected within a group or duo and now performs as a solo artist does not qualify. A group or duo who has a group member previously selected as an individual performing artist does not qualify.
  • Eligible artists must have completed 5 live performances in the last 18 months. Live performances must be shows where the artist/band was paid a guaranteed fee or percentage of revenue from ticket sales.
  • Eligible artists must be registered SOCAN members. To complete the application visit www.socan.ca. SOCAN membership for creators is free of charge.

I’m in a band, do I qualify?

  • Yes, SiriusXM is seeking bands and solo artists.
  • Eligible artists must be Canadian citizens.
    • the Canadian member(s) receiving the majority of royalties, touring profits and other proceeds earned by the group; and
    • the Canadian member(s) being the creative force behind the group and/or the principal songwriters for the group.
  • Eligible artists must showcase music in English.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have been previously nominated for a JUNO Award or a Polaris Music Prize.
  • Eligible artists must NOT have previously won a Canadian Country Music Association Award.

How many people per band?

  • A maximum of five (5) band members are permitted in each act.

Does every member of the band need to register?

  • No. Please elect one member to represent the band and register on behalf of the group.

What region am I considered to be?

  • Eastern Canada is considered: Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
  • Central Canada is considered: Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.
  • Western Canada is considered: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, British Columbia, Northwest Territories and Yukon.

When do I have to be available?

  • Eastern Canada registrants:
    • April 6-7 (Recording Session in Halifax, NS)
    • July 6-8 (Festival performance in Cavendish, PEI)
    • August 9-12 (Festival performance in Oro-Medonte, ON)
    • August 13-15 (Mentor Session in Toronto, ON)
    • September 6-11 (Finale in Hamilton, ON and press tour in Toronto, ON)
  • Central Canada registrants:
    • March 27-29 (Recording Session in Toronto, ON)
    • August 9-12 (Festival performance in Oro-Medonte, ON)
    • August 13-15 (Mentor Session in Toronto, ON)
    • September 6-11 (Finale in Hamilton, ON and press tour in Toronto, ON)
  • Western Canada registrants:
    • March 24-25 (Recording Session in Toronto, ON)
    • August 2-5 (Festival performance in Camrose, AB)
    • August 9-12 (Festival performance in Oro-Medonte, ON)
    • August 13-15 (Mentor Session in Toronto, ON)
    • September 6-11 (Finale in Hamilton, ON and press tour in Toronto, ON)

What if band member(s) are not available for the above date(s)?

  • Attendance at every stage is required. If band member(s) are unable to attend, alternates may be permitted with special permission from SiriusXM Canada, however adding more band members after submitting the video and application is not permitted.
  • If an entire band or solo act is unable to attend any of the above dates, they will be disqualified from the competition.
  • Registrants must provide the number of band members at time of registration.

I live in Quebec, do I qualify?

  • Yes, the competition is open to all provinces and territories and artists showcasing music in English.

What should my performance link be?

  • The Performance Link must be footage of a performance within the previous 18 months.

What about social media?

  • Eligible artists must have and actively use social media accounts including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
  • Social media accounts should be dedicated to the promotion of the band/artist.

What is considered a live performance?

  • A live performance must be a show where the artist/band was paid a guaranteed fee or percentage of revenue from ticket sales. SiriusXM Canada may contact the applicant for proof of payment/performance.

Do I have to pay to get myself/my band to every performance?

  • No. Each act will be provided with a travel grant to be used for transportation/accommodation at each stage of the competition.
  • The travel grant will be calculated based on number of members per act.
  • The travel grant will be made payable to the member of the group who registered the act.
  • All artists are responsible for booking their own travel.

How long will my Recording Session be?

  • The Recording Session will be a maximum of one (1) song and recording time may not exceed six (6) hours including load-in, load-out, set-up and performance.

What kind of prizing is on the line?

  • 3 finalists to perform at Canada’s biggest country music festivals.
  • 3 finalists to participate in mentorship sessions with industry experts in Toronto.
  • 3 finalists to perform at Finale with Canadian headliner during Canadian Country Music Week.
  • 3 finalists to be provided with a SOCAN Songwriting Camp trip to Nashville including airfare, accommodation, and mentorship sessions. The week will occur at a mutually agreed upon time.
  • Grand Prize winner: $25,000 cash prize, spot within SOCAN’s “West Coast Writer Camp” taking place on Pender Island in British Columbia from September 18-24, 2018. SOCAN to provide round trip airfare, accommodations and meals for the “West Coast Writer Camp”
  • Each finalist will receive travel grants to attend festivals, mentorship sessions, Finale.
  • Each semi-finalist act at studio sessions will receive a travel grant to attend session, and high quality video and audio recordings of their studio session.

  • Eligible artists must be registered SOCAN members. To complete the application visit www.socan.ca. SOCAN membership for creators is free of charge.
