“Modern Family” star Sofia Vergara is in legal brawl with her ex-fiancé Nick Loeb over two embryos they had frozen when they were a couple. Loeb, who wrote an op-ed for the New York Times last week on the issue, is pleading for the embryos to be implanted in a surrogate mother and carried to term while Vergara wants them to remain frozen forever (Translation: destroyed.) MSNBC’s Seema Iyer, Esq. joined the show and made it clear that under the law, Vergara’s ex-fiancé is facing a challenging but not impossible task to get sole custody of the embryos and bring them to term over Vergara’s objections. But some listeners called in expressing their view that Loeb should have the right to bring the child into this world over Vergara’s objections because she would’ve had the right to abort a fetus without the consent of her partner.
Can we trust the police? The Baltimore state attorney charged six Baltimore police officers on a range of charges from murder to official misconduct in connection with the death of Freddie Grey. When you read the police report concerning the arrest of Freddie Gray it is clear that the police officer’s lied. The arresting officer claimed Grey had a switchblade knife, which was the reason for the arrest, but it’s now clear that Grey didn’t as the prosecutor’s officer announced Friday. The Muslim Chaplin for the Baltimore Police Department Imam Hassan Amin and Baltimore’s Zainab Chaudry of CAIR discussed the reason for the protests and the bigger question: Can the police be trusted?
The Christian Brotherhood is as scary as the Muslim Brotherhood. Mona Eltahawy, author of the new provocative book “Headscarves and Hymens: Why the Middle East Needs a Sexual Revolution” explained the need for women to stand up for their rights in both Middle East and the United States especially on the issue of reproductive rights. Eltahawy noted that right wing Christian men and right wing Muslim men share the same mindset of controlling women on a range of issues, including sexuality. She also discussed that Arab women – both Christian and Muslim – are subject in her home country of Egypt to widespread female genital mutilation (FGM). While FGM is not called for by either the Bible or Quran it is distressingly part of the strategy of many men for controlling the sexuality of women.
NYC’s MTA puts up anti-Muslim posters on buses and subways but drags its feet on positive posters about Muslims. Comedian/filmmaker Negin Farsad and I put together a poster campaign that was funny and positive Muslims to go up in 140 NYC subway stops. The NYC MTA put up two series of posters that demonized Muslims. But the MTA now is trying to stop the positive posters about Muslims. Why? Negin Farsad explains it all.
