It’s AutoShow season again, and the 2018 Canadian International AutoShow is just about here!
The long cold winters and lack of sunlight affect all retailers equally. January and February are traditionally slow retail environments. This back water of the Christmas’ rush has a devastating effect especially on the Automotive sector.
The Auto Dealer’s in the Toronto area needed a spark to get things moving again. Hence, in 1974 the automotive business community rented space at the International Centre in Malton, Ontario and started the first Canadian International AutoShow.
Why Malton and why the International Centre?
Well, access was one reason and free parking was the other. Having said, that there was a third asset by using this facility. You needed a car to get there. Needing a car filtered most of the tire kickers and kids. Folks trekking out to the site were serious car buyers. I worked that show and we sold a lot of cars.
The popularity of the show drew more manufactures to the event and soon CIAS out grew the facility.
The Toronto Convention Centre became it’s new and current location. Located downtown with hotels near by, the show grew in sophistication. The move also allowed business men and women to see the show during the day, increasing crowds. The show still drew large crowds on the weekend’s. Downtown Toronto became the perfect location.
Manufactures used the facility and nearby hotels to entertain dealers and suppliers. The TADA (Trillium Auto Dealers Association) owners of the show host various dinners and VIP nights allowing the industry to talk and renew old relationships. In short, a lot of business is conducted.
There’s really a lot to see at this year’s event. The 70th anniversary of the iconic Porsche. The 50th anniversary of HOTWHEELS. Automobile Jewelry, the world’s fasted production car and more.
This year the show is introducing a new feature called “the Automotive Intelligence Series”.
A series of panel discussions covering a wide range of topics centered around the automobile.
Yours truly will be hosting the discussion on Sunday the 19th – Mobility and Our Aging Population.
Davesconergarage.com will be broadcasting a special on the show on Saturday also available as a podcast. Plus, we’re holding a Town Hall Monday February 19th supported by Sirius XM.
It’s a busy weekend. The 2018 Canadian International AutoShow runs February16th to the 25th. It a great experience even if you’re not a car guy or gal.
Look for us …we would love to say hello.
