Congratulations if you’re off to the second round of the fantasy playoffs. For the rest of you – better luck next season! Hit the showers!

To be honest, I take more pride in winning the regular season over the playoffs. When it comes to the fantasy post-season, it’s an absolute crap shoot. It’s all about having players who are hot. That’s unless you own Brad Marchand. Then, nothing else matters.

Before, I set you up for the upcoming week, let’s take a look back at the past week and some of its top performers.

PLAYOFF PERFORMERS

Brad Marchand – LW – Boston Bruins

March Madness was actually intended for Marchand. He’s been on complete fire and if you own him, you’re most likely off to round two. In three games through western Canada, the feisty winger potted five goals and added four assists for nine points. He also chipped in a +3, three power play points, a game winning goal and 12 shots on goal. He literally did it all.

Sidney Crosby – C – Pittsburgh Penguins

How good is the Hart, Art Ross and Rocket Richard race getting? It’s ridiculous. Marchand’s hot play woke up Sidney Crosby too. Crosby wrapped things up on Sunday with a dominating hat trick performance in a 4-0 rout over Florida. When he’s on, he can’t be stopped and we all know this. In four games, he tallied a whopping six goals and eight points while accumulating a +3 rating and 16 shots on goal. For fantasy owners, 87 is heating up at the right time. Then again – when is he not on fire?

Jonathan Bernier – G – Anaheim Ducks

You’re smiling ear-to-ear right now if you’re a Bernier owner. He was dominant last week as he continues to fill in for the injured John Gibson in Anaheim. Bernier went 2-0-1 surrendering just three goals. For a wire grab a couple weeks back, he’s doing the job and then some for fantasy owners. Keep riding him!

Jake Allen – G – St. Louis Blues

It’s hard to remember the struggling version of Jake Allen. The Blues leapfrogged the Predators into third spot in the Central Division with a 3-0 triumphant over Arizona on Saturday night. In two starts last week, Allen surrendered just one goal notching a shutout and two victories. He’s quietly turned things around which automatically, for me at least, makes St. Louis a legitimate threat come the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Jaccob Slavin – D – Carolina Hurricanes

I hope you took my advice of picking up Slavin last week. The Carolina Hurricanes had a monster five game schedule and Slavin took off – doing most of his work in an early week 8-4 win over the New York Islanders. In that performance, the sophomore netted his first career hat trick and also an assist increasing his fantasy value exponentially.

Tomas Tatar – LW, RW – Detroit Red Wings

The Slovak winger has been sneaky hot the last couple weeks. Playing predominantly on a line with Captain Henrik Zetterberg, they’ve been lighting it up. In his last two games, Tatar has collected three goals and two assists for a tidy five points. He’s definitely worth a grab on the waiver wire right now.

SPECIAL MENTIONS

  • SJS Logan Couture (2 Goals, 2 Assists, 4 Points, +2, 2 PPP, 10 SOG)
  • TBL Brayden Point (3 Goals, 2 Assists, 5 points, 1 PPP, 9 SOG)
  • EDM Cam Talbot (3 W, 1.76 GAA, .947 SVP%, 1 SO)

ROUND 2 PREVIEW

As you set your rosters for the semi-finals, again – it’s vital to check out not only your matchups but what your opponent has going as well.

A total of 14 teams have four games this upcoming week. (ARI, BOS, DAL, DET, EDM, MIN, NJD, NYR, PHI, PIT, SJS, TOR, VAN, WPG)

Meantime, the 16 other teams have a three game schedule.

As you all know, the key is to find players who play on the NHL’s ‘dark’ nights. That’s essentially Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and to a degree – Sundays.

Some squads of interest for you this week – Edmonton and Toronto who both play on Monday and Wednesday.

Here are some other teams to consider as well –

Detroit: Monday (BUF), Tuesday (@MTL), Friday (TBL), Sunday (MIN)

Dallas: Monday (SJS), Thursday (CHI), Friday (SJS), Sunday (@NJD)

Winnipeg: Tuesday (PHI), Thursday (@LAK), Friday (@ANA), Sunday (VAN)

WAIVER WARRIORS

Dylan Larkin – C, RW – Detroit Red Wings

Tyler Bozak – C – Toronto Maple Leafs

David Desharnais – C – Edmonton Oilers

Patrick Maroon – LW – Edmonton Oilers

Sean Couturier – C – Philadelphia Flyers
