SiriusXM Country Roundup Week of May 19th, 2017: Country stars remember Chris Cornell + more

Chris Cornell

Zac Brown (l) performs with Chris Cornell in 2015

Sarah Burke here, and I’m looking at the week that was in country music, including some of the biggest stars remembering Chris Cornell of Soundgarden.

SirusXM’s #MostWanted

Dean Brody catches up to James Barker Band with Beautiful Freakshow moving into the #2 spot & Aaron Goodvin isn’t far behind, cracking the Top 3 with #LonelyDrum – Who’s getting tired of James Barker Band hogging #1!? [Kidding, we love the track].

We release this list of the hottest songs in Canadian Country music every week – we’ll keep you posted on our socials:

Keith Urban Sings National Anthem at Predators Game 3

The Predators are lucky for two reasons; one, they lead their best-of-seven playoff series with Anaheim 2-1 and they have had some of the best anthems courtesy of music city.

The latest country star to join Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Little Big Town on the ice is Keith Urban, who performed the anthem ahead of Game 3 in the western conference final.

Country Stars Mourn Loss of Chris Cornell

Country musicians have been paying tribute to Chris Cornell, the Soundgarden & Audioslave frontman who passed away this week at 52.  That includes Zac Brown Band, who teamed up with Cornell on the song “Heavy is the Head” for 2015’s Jekyll + Hyde.

Cornell also backed up Jason Aldean with rhythm guitar and backing vocals for CMT’s Artists of the Year special on the song “Just Getting’ Started.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone, he said:

“I only got to work with Chris once, but he was a true rock star…He was a badass onstage and a class act off stage.”

You’ll remember Johnny Cash covered Soundgarden’s “Rusty Cage” on his album Unchained.  On Cash, Chris Cornell told Rolling Stone what it was like to hear him cover the song:

“I had , an experience years ago when Johnny Cash covered Rusty Cage, and I started to get messages on my answering machine from people telling me how much they liked the lyrics. We put that song out five years earlier on Badmotorfinger, and nobody left me any messages. When you strip it down and Johnny Cash sings, you listen to what he’s saying. It’s a whole different angle.”
