Mick Kern from NHL Network Radio here. We’re running down the must-hear NHL games of the week, including the Panthers at the Bruins and the Capitals visiting the Sabres:

Saturday, December 3rd, 2016 – Detroit Red Wings at Pittsburgh Penguins
6:40 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 221

They met in the 2008, and 2009, Stanley Cup Finals.  Both teams now reside in the Eastern Conference, with the Penguins the defending Stanley Cup Champions.  The Red Wings haven’t missed the playoffs since the early 1990’s, though that impressive streak is in danger.  Some Detroit fans would welcome that, hoping the team can pick up a couple of high draft choices.

Sunday, December 4th, 2016 – Winnipeg Jets at Chicago Blackhawks
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 220

Another season, another very good Blackhawks’ team, sitting at or near the top of the tough Central Division.  Further down the standings are the Winnipeg Jets, who missed the playoffs this past spring, and are picked by many to get back there this time around.  They’ll have to play with more consistency in order to make that happen.

Monday, December 5th, 2016 – Florida Panthers at Boston Bruins
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 219

It caught many by surprise, but the Florida Panthers were the first team to say goodbye to their head coach, replacing Gerard Gallant with Tom Rowe.  It remains to be seen if the Panthers can now duplicate the regular season success they enjoyed last year.  As for the Bruins, they are staying close in the Eastern Conference wildcard race.

Tuesday, December 6th, 2016 – New York Rangers at New York Islanders
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91

Always a great game when these two rivals meet up on a sheet of ice.  The Rangers are one of the pleasant surprises so far this season, though they’ve had some problems recently winning at home.  Tonight they’re on the road, taking on an Islanders’ team that are one of the disappointments so far this campaign, sitting in last place in the Eastern Conference.

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016 – Ottawa Senators at San Jose Sharks
10:30 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91

Two months in, both of these teams are in playoff positions in their respective divisions.  The Sharks are coming off a Stanley Cup Final appearance this past spring, and many expect them to be back there again come June.  The Senators changed up their coaching staff, and the results have been tighter defensive play, which has translated to more points in the standings.

Thursday, December 8th, 2016 – Edmonton Oilers at Philadelphia Flyers
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91

So will the Oilers finally make the playoffs this season?  They jumped out to an impressive start, but haven’t been all that hot in their past ten games.  Regardless, any team with Connor McDavid is worth your time.  The Flyers have been pretty much a .500 team since the start of the season, and they’ll have to bump up their play in order to grab one of the Eastern Conference wildcard spots.

Friday, December 9th, 2016 – Washington Capitals at Buffalo Sabres
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91

The Sabres are finally getting back some of their walking wounded, and tonight face a Washington team that are challenging for top spot in the Metropolitan Division.
