Mick Kern from NHL Network Radio here. We’re running down the must-hear NHL games of the week, including the Leafs at Boston, and Arizona at Winnipeg!
Saturday, February 3rd – Toronto Maple Leafs at Boston Bruins
7:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 91
The way things are shaping up, these two teams could be destined to collide this spring in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs…unless the surging Bruins continue their winning ways and take over the Atlantic Division from the pre-season favourite Tampa Bay Lightning. Toronto appears to be destined to finish third in that division. Boston and Toronto last met up in early November, with the hometown Leafs emerging with a 3-2 overtime win on November 10th, then they registered a 4-1 win the next night in Boston.
Sunday, February 4th – Vegas Golden Knights at Washington Capitals
12:30 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 219
And the beat goes on for the expansion Golden Knights, who find themselves in the nation’s capital tonight, facing a Capitals team that has been among the leaders in the tough Metropolitan Division. This is the fourth game in a six game road trip for Vegas.
Monday, February 5th – Tampa Bay Lightning at Edmonton Oilers
9:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 167
Back in September, many picked this as the most likely 2018 Stanley Cup Final matchup. Hey, it still could still happen. The odds are against the underachieving Oilers qualifying for the Western Conference playoffs. Not the same case for the high flying Lightning, who have been on top of the Eastern Conference standings for the longest time. The red hot Boston Bruins may challenge them for first place in the Atlantic Division.
Tuesday, February 6th – Arizona Coyotes at Winnipeg Jets
7:30 PM Eastern – XM 207
A battle of the original Winnipeg Jets against the old Atlanta Thrashers. More importantly, it’s a battle between the high flying current Jets vs. the last place Coyotes. Winnipeg has taken a big step forward this season, while Arizona have been a disappointment.
Wednesday, February 7th – Boston Bruins at New York Rangers
8:00 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 219
These two old rivals meet up in Manhattan this evening, with the Bruins one of the hottest teams in the National Hockey League. They are guaranteed to be the in the playoffs come mid-April; can the same be said about the Rangers? There have been rumours that New York will be selling off assets with the NHL Trade Deadline less than a month away.
Thursday, February 8th – Colorado Avalanche at St. Louis Blues
7:35 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 223
Yes, the Vegas Golden Knights are the surprise story of the hockey world, but give the Avalanche a lot of credit. They are middle of the Western Conference playoff dogfight, which pretty much nobody figured they would be part of. Tonight, the Avs face the St. Louis Blues, who are involved in their own dogfight for first place in the contentious Central Division.
Friday, February 9th – Pittsburgh Penguins at Dallas Stars
8:30 PM Eastern – Sirius XM 223
Many had this tabbed as a potential 2018 Stanley Cup Final. The two-time defending Cup champion Penguins have not enjoyed the smoothest season to date, and can either finish first in the Metropolitan Division, or miss the playoffs altogether. As for the Stars, they face pretty much the same scenario in the Central Division. Which means all these games count.
