Some key games for SiriusXM NHL Network Radio fans this week across the league include the Rangers at the Islanders, Edmonton at Vancouver, and Toronto at Tampa Bay.
Saturday, January 12th – New York Rangers at New York Islanders
1:00 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 91
One of the great rivalries in the National Hockey League, this time around the Islanders are in the thick of the playoff hunt in the Eastern Conference, while the Rangers are on the outside looking in. Two nights ago at Madison Square Garden, the Islanders scored late to pull out a 4-3 win over the Broadway Blueshirts.
Sunday, January 13th – Arizona Coyotes at Calgary Flames
9:30 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 91
2004 is the last year the Calgary Flames were in the Stanley Cup Final, and 1989 is the last time (and so far only time) the Flames won the Cup. Could they find themselves back in the Cup Final again this June? They appear to have everything, though many question whether their goaltending will hold up. The Coyotes most likely will not quality for the playoffs in the Western Conference, though they are close enough to be a factor down the stretch.
Monday, January 14th – Montreal Canadiens at Boston Bruins
7:30 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Another one of the great NHL rivalries, regardless of where these two teams sit in the standings. This time around, the Bruins are back on track as one of the powers in the Atlantic Division. Most likely, they’ll face the Toronto Maple Leafs in the opening round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs come mid-April. Will Montreal make the playoff cut? It would have to be a wildcard spot, and the Habs will have to battle down to the wire in order to grab it.
Tuesday, January 15th – Vegas Golden Knights at Winnipeg Jets
8:00 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 167
Look out folks; the Vegas Golden Knights appear to be back. The surprise expansion team of last season, which made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final (losing to the Capitals in five games), are once again a force in the tough Pacific Division. The team they face tonight are one of the top teams in the league. Yet the Golden Knights handled the Winnipeg Jets last spring in the Western Conference Final, taking them down in five games.
Wednesday, January 16th – Edmonton Oilers at Vancouver Canucks
10:00 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 91
A quick check of the Canadian based NHL clubs shows that the Jets, Flames, and Maple Leafs can print playoff tickets now, Ottawa is done, while Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver are trying to get their respective printing presses warmed up. The Oilers and Canucks face off tonight on the Lower Mainland. Both teams have remained close to the final Western wildcard, so the two points up for grabs this evening are huge.
Thursday, January 17th – Toronto Maple Leafs at Tampa Bay Lightning
7300 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Is this a possible second round playoff matchup this spring? The Lightning are running away with the Atlantic Division crown, and most observers agree that anything less than a Stanley Cup Final appearance will be a bitter disappointment for the talented Bolts. A similar sentiment can be said for the Maple Leafs, who are looking to finally win a playoff round this spring. Fasten your seatbelt; this game tonight could end 2-1, or 7-5.
Friday, January 18th – New York Islanders at Washington Capitals
7:30 PM Eastern – SiriusXM 219
We all know the Washington Capitals finally won it all last June, and halfway through the 2018-19 regular season, there doesn’t appear to be any Stanley Cup hangover for the Caps. They have been at, or near, the top of the Metropolitan Division pretty much since things got underway back in October. The Islanders are not that far behind the pace set by Washington.
