NHL Network Radio Runs Down This Week’s Stanley Cup Playoffs

Here we go again, as 16 NHL teams get ready for the marathon-sprint that is the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Two months of the most intense tournament in sports, and the winner gets their paws on the greatest trophy in the world!

Last June, the Washington Capitals finally reached the summit, after over 40 years of trying.  Captain Alex Ovechkin was handed the Stanley Cup, and never let go.  He took it with him to talk shows, restaurants, airplanes, rallies, and seemingly every fountain in Las Vegas.  It was arguably the greatest Stanley Cup celebration in history.

Can the Capitals repeat as Cup champions?  It’s always tough to win one, let alone two in-a-row.  Their chief rivals, the Pittsburgh Penguins, were the last team to do so, turning the double play in 2016, and 2017.  Before the Pens, one has to travel back a couple of decades to find the Detroit Red Wings, who went Double Dutch in 1997, and 1998.

Playoff predictions across the board pretty much favour the league leading Tampa Bay Lightning, who tied the NHL single season record with a jaw dropping 62 wins.  Nice, but the big question is can they tack on another 16 wins in the spring?  That’s what it takes to win the Stanley Cup.

The modern NHL features a number of legitimate Cup contenders, including the Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins, Winnipeg Jets, and Nashville Predators.  What about the red hot St. Louis Blues, who completely turned around their season since the calendar changed?  Don’t count out the San Jose Sharks, or the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Then there’s those pesky Vegas Golden Knights, who made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season last spring.  They put up 16 less regular season points the second time around, but many like the makeup of this team, and think they can make another run to the Final.

How about the New York Islanders, who missed the Eastern Conference playoff cut by 17 points last year, yet challenged for the Metropolitan Division crown all season long before finishing second to the Capitals.  Isles’ head coach Barry Trotz knows all about playoff success, having been the Caps’ bench boss last season.  He helped turn the Islanders into a defensive juggernaut, best in the NHL.

Don’t look past the Dallas Stars, who sported the second stingiest defence this year.

And what to make of the likes of Colorado, Columbus, and Carolina?  The C teams find themselves in challenging positions this April.  Last spring, the Blue Jackets held a 2-0 lead in games against Washington, and Game Three went to overtime…and Columbus couldn’t close the deal.  They’re yet to win a playoff series, and are in tough again this time around, as they face the league leading Tampa Bay Lightning.

Carolina surged into the playoffs, after missing out of the party last season.  Can they knock off the defending Stanley Cup champions?  Well, that’s why they play the games.
