Banquets and hockey go hand-in-hand, whether it be the season ending festivities for the St. Albert Minor Hockey Association, or a roast of retired NHL’ers.
Which is what happened this past Friday night in Niagara Falls. The 7th Annual Steve Ludzik Celebrity Roast, in support of The Steve Ludzik Foundation, which raises money for the fight against Parkinson’s disease.
Styled after the uproarious Rat Pack roasts that were hosted by Dean Martin, this time around legendary Boston Bruin Derek Sanderson was the man in the spotlight. Hosting the frivolity was Steve Kouleas of SiriusXM NHL Network Radio, who kept the evening hopping with his high energy approach and timely witticism’s.
Joining Steve on stage were the likes of former NHL’ers Chris Nilan, and Rick Nattress. Also involved in the roast were Hockey Night in Canada legend Ron MacLean, TSN veteran broadcaster Michael Landsberg, and actor Art Hindle. Each took their shots at Sanderson, though the underlining tone of the evening was one of appreciation, and celebration.
NHL Network Radio‘s The Power Play, hosted by Steve Kouleas and Matthew Barnaby, broadcast from the VIP Party that was held just before the Roast got underway. The guys were joined by a veritable who’s- who in the hockey world, including former Maple Leafs’ defenceman Jim McKenny, former NHL referee Bryan Lewis, in addition to Chris Nilan, and the man of the hour, Derek Sanderson.
