Red Hot Chili Peppers are set to release their eleventh studio album The Getaway on June 17. Ahead of the release, the band caught up with their old friend and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready at this year’s Jazz Fest in New Orleans.

Among the topics discussed was Prince’s influence on the band.

“I was listening to Prince a lot,” Flea recalled. “He was a real big part of my development.”

They also reminisced about touring together in the early ‘90s and the role RHCP played in helping break Pearl Jam, who had just released their debut album Ten before being invited to open for RHCP on their Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour.

“It could be said we wouldn’t exist without the Chili Peppers,” McCready told Chad Smith, who then recounted the story of hearing Pearl Jam for the first time.

Following the release of the album’s lead single, Dark Necessitates, which dropped earlier this month, Flea revealed that their next single is the album’s seventh track, Go Robot.

“It’s a funny, funky, up-tempo jam,” Flea explained. “It’s funny because when we were mixing and writing it and stuff … I wanted it to sound like Controversy by Prince.”
