The second decade of the 21st century was a notable one for the National Hockey League. Whether it was the adoption of 3-on-3 overtime or the return of the Winnipeg Jets, the past ten years have been chock full of highlights.

The crew of SiriusXM NHL Network Radio have produced a two hour special Defining Moments of the Decade, and the truth is, they could have used an additional couple of hours to cover everything that happened.

Try these on for size…The Golden Goal, the OT Stanley Cup-winning goal only Patrick Kane (and Patrick Sharp) saw, NHL hockey in Las Vegas, Zdeno Chara hoisting the Stanley Cup, the Kings and Blues finally winning it all, and Alex Ovechkin with the ultimate Cup celebration of all-time.

Then there were lighter moments, like Gritty. Yup, love him or hate him, Gritty made an impact in the age of social media and was everywhere.

Iconic players such as Jaromir Jagr took their final bow in the NHL, while there was that date in June 2016 when two blockbuster trades occurred within minutes of each other.

And on June 10th, 2016, one of the most famous hockey players of all-time, Gordie Howe, passed away at the age of 88.

Each of the current 31 NHL teams no doubt would have their own list of Defining Moments of the Decade. For example, the San Jose Sharks finally made it to the Stanley Cup Final, though they came up a bit short against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Pens’ captain Sidney Crosby won back-to-back Conn Smythe Trophies as the top player in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the first player to do so since Flyers’ goaltender Bernie Parent in the mid-1970s.

Somehow the Toronto Maple Leafs failed to win a playoff series all decade, seemingly always running into the Boston Bruins.

The Chicago Blackhawks led the Stanley Cup parade with three championships during the decade. The aforementioned Penguins and Kings, each grabbed two Cup rings. The Bruins took home their first Cup since 1972, and both the Capitals and St. Louis Blues were finally able to end lengthy droughts by respectively winning their first championships in franchise history.

Defining Moments of the Decade highlights each and every one of these great moments by providing you with a historical backdrop, supplemented by audio from those particular events.

We also talk with NHL Network Radio personalities such as Scott Laughlin, Steve Kouleas, Gord Stellick, Mike Johnson, Matthew Barnaby, Bruce Bolton, Boomer Gordon, and Ryan Paton for their take on some of the events from the past decade in hockey.

Whether it was a great decade for your favourite NHL team, or one more fraught with frustration, the past ten years created a lot of hockey history.

Defining Moments of the Decade can be heard on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio beginning at 5 pm Eastern (2 pm Pacific) on Christmas Eve, and at various times throughout the upcoming holidays. You can also hear the program on-demand.
