The debut album from The Doors turns 50 on Classic Vinyl

The Doors

When it comes to classic debut albums, few are more seminal than the one released by a band from Los Angeles, California…The Doors.

The band featured Jim Morrison on vocals, Robbie Krieger on guitar, John Densmore on drums and Ray Manzarek on keyboard (and basslines). Taking their name from the Aldous Huxley book, The Doors of Perception, The Doors didn’t sound like any other to come out of the mid-60’s Los Angeles Sunset Strip scene.

All of them were unique – Densmore brought jazz to a rock band. Manzarek’s keyboards had a baroque sensibility to them. Krieger’s guitar playing displayed a flamenco flair, thanks to his finger-picking playing.

And then there was Jim Morrison – a poet and the band’s main lyricist (though it would be Krieger who would pen the lyrics to the band’s biggest hit, Light My Fire.)

This past January marked the 50th anniversary of the release of The Doors’ debut album, which is being celebrated in a brand new multi-disc box set, featuring mono and stereo versions of this defining release.
