NOTE: The stats are used from Yahoo! fantasy leagues
When it comes to Fantasy Hockey, it’s all about using the schedule to your advantage. With the NHL’s newly implemented bye week, planning around the NHL docket has never been more integral in managing your fantasy hockey team. Plan accordingly!
Teams playing four games this week:
- Buffalo Sabres
- Minnesota Wild
- Tampa Bay Lightning
Look for players like Mikko Koivu and Charlie Coyle to add to your lineup early this week. They have a back-to-back against Nashville and Arizona. Koivu is only owned in 11% of Yahoo! leagues while Coyle is one owned in 9%. They both work the 2nd power play unit and are looking good with a revitalized Zach Parise on the left side
Other players to look for: Casey Mittlestadt (BUF – 34% owned), Conor Sheary (BUF – 17% owned), Ondrej Palat (TBL – 14% owned), Alex Killorn (TBL – 9% owned)
Teams playing two games this week:
- San Jose
- St. Louis
We all knew John Tavares of the Toronto Maple Leafs was going to do damage. But what the Leafs are doing is crazy. JT isn’t the only newcomer to be putting points, as Calgary Flames forward Elias Lindholm has looked great with Bill Peters in Alberta.
The 23-year old has 6 points in 5 games including 2 power play goals and 2 game winners. If he’s available in your league scoop him up now and if he’s not, place him on your watch list and try and pry him away when there’s a lull in the Flames schedule.
Say what you will about the Erik Karlsson trade from San Jose to Ottawa but as of right now the Senators have a better record than the Sharks. I know I know, it’s early and it’s not going to stay that way. However, there is some fantasy value here with trade pieces Chris Tierney and Dylan Demelo putting up early fantasy points.
Sens Head Coach Guy Boucher is diligent in his systematic ways. Heck, he got the Senators within one goal of the Stanley Cup Final. One player who is thriving in his new role is forward Chris Tierney. He has 7 points in 5 games with 4 coming on the power play. The kicker? He’s owned in just 8% of Yahoo! leagues! As for Demelo (3% owned), he’s a +5 and is winning favour with the bench boss, so keep an eye on him.
Other players to look for: Tomas Tatar (MTL – 14% owned), Valtteri Filppula (NYI – 1% owned), Jordan Martinook (CAR – 1% owned)
Buy Low – Sell High
I’m a big believer in momentum. I will ride the hot hand and stay away from cold streaks. In fantasy hockey it’s no different however you can use momentum to swing some big trades in your favour.
Vancouver Canucks Rookie Forward Elias Pettersson has caught the NHL by storm. Despite getting injured by Panthers D-man Mike Matheson, the kid looks to be the real deal. 8 points in 5 games is no laughing matter and he’s now owned in 76% of fantasy leagues
If his injury is not serious, it’s time to trade the kid. Chances are if he’s on your team, you scooped him up late in your draft or took a flyer on him in the waiver wire. If your team is in need of a defenseman, this is your best trade chip.
Teams are also generating film on him, so later in the season he might not have as many looks at the net or as favourable a match-up especially on the road.
