Throughout the course of February, Canadian channels across SiriusXM are celebrating Black History Month with a variety of special programming. Here’s a rundown of what you can hear and when.
Vocalist and guitarist Densil McFarlane of Canadian punk band The OBGMs (Ooohh Baby Gimme Mores) will takeover The Verge (SiriusXM 173) with a 100% black playlist to celebrate Black History Month. Densil will introduce Verge listeners to his favourite emerging black artists and walk us through some of the band’s latest record The Ends.

Singer-songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada of American psych-soul band The Black Pumas will take over North Americana (SiriusXM 359) to share how the music of ‘the greats’ like Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, and Marvin Gaye have inspired their music. They are nominated for Best American Roots Performance with their song Colors, Record of the Year for Colors, and Album of the Year for the deluxe edition of their self-titled album Black Pumas.

Canadian rapper and producer Kardinal Offishall will take over SiriusXM’s new pop channel Poplandia (SiriusXM 754) for an hour with a playlist 100% dedicated to putting the spotlight on black Canadian pop and hip-hop artists. He’ll also tell the stories behind some of his fan favourites.

Multiple CCMA Award nominee JoJo Mason will take over CBC Country (SiriusXM 171) with a hand-picked playlist of his favourite country artists. In honour of Black History Month, he’ll discuss how Charlie Pride, Darius Rucker and Kane Brown have paved the way for Black country artists, his experience with mental health as a Black artist in Canada, and his mentorship from two-time CCMA Entertainer of the Year Dallas Smith.
