PENTICTON, BC - SEPTEMBER 17: Reid Schaefer #53 of Edmonton Oilers skates against the Calgary Flames at the South Okanagan Event Centre during the 2022 Young Stars Tournament on September 16, 2022 in Penticton, Canada.

The first hour of this week’s Hockey Prospect Radio on NHL Network Radio has Shane Malloy and Brad Allen discussing the Edmonton Oilers prospects with Director of Amateur Scouting Tyler Wright featuring 2022 first-round pick Reid Schaefer and 2021 third-round pick Luca Munzenberger, and then the Oilers’ 2019 first-round pick Phillip Broberg and 2019 second-round pick Raphael Lavoie.

Next, we focus on Player Development during our regular segment with NHL skills and skating coach Pat Malloy. This week we focus on his lessons learned from working with some of the best players in the world. Then, we shift our Player Development discussion to the topic of hard skill and dictating the terms of play with hard skill habits and mindset.

In the second hour, we shift the discussion to Pittsburgh Penguins’ Assistant General Manager Chris Pryor, profiling 2022 NHL Draft first-round pick defenceman Owen Pickering and 2022 fourth-round pick goalie Sergei Murashov. And we continue chatting about the Pens’ prospects, focusing on 2021 second-round pick forward Tristian Broz and 2019 first-round pick Samuel Poulin.

Finally, we bring in Dr. Kevin Willis to discuss the mental side of the game, delving into the concept of identifying, monitoring, and measuring grit in hockey players. We discuss perception, examining motivations, and breaking free of self-destructive thought patterns in the assessment utilized in his academic and his professional practical application.
