The movie musical follows Usnavi (Hamilton star Anthony Ramos), a bodega owner who dreams of leaving Manhattan behind and starting over in the Dominican Republic. But his community compels him to stay — especially his love interest, a beauty salon stylist and aspiring fashion designer named Vanessa (Vida actress Melissa Barrera). His orbit also includes his friend Nina (singer-songwriter Leslie Grace), a star student who returns home after struggling to find her place at Stanford, and Benny (Straight Outta Compton and 6 Underground actor Corey Hawkins), who works for Nina’s father and pursues a romance with her. As they find their own paths, they are tied together by joy and heartbreak on their block in the barrio.
