McDavid and Ovechkin face off in Washington and more NHL Games of the Week

Ovechkin McDavid
WASHINGTON, DC - NOVEMBER 07: Connor McDavid #97 of the Edmonton Oilers skates with the puck as Alex Ovechkin #8 of the Washington Capitals defends during the third period at Capital One Arena on November 07, 2022 in Washington, DC. This is McDavid's 500th career game.

Saturday, November 15th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Boston Bruins at Montreal Canadiens

One of the great rivalries in the storied history of the NHL, it has recently been somewhat dormant, as the Bruins have been successful and the Canadiens have been undergoing a rebuilding process. This time around, it’s the young, exciting Habs who are supposed to be good, and they are. But so are the Bruins!  Great start to the season…then a bit of a dip…then back to playing solid hockey. Nobody had this game tonight as a battle for potential first-place teams in the Atlantic Division, but that is where we are at.

Sunday, November 16th – 9:00 am Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Nashville Predators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Yes, you read that correctly. A 9 am Eastern (6 am Pacific) time start. Why? It’s the second game in the Global Series taking place in Stockholm, Sweden. The Penguins have been one of the pleasant surprises so far this season, while the Predators continue to play well below what was initially expected of them heading into last season.

Monday, November 17th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Utah Mammoth at Anaheim Ducks

Two of the new guard in the West, is there room enough in the playoffs this spring for both these up-and-coming squads? The Ducks appear to have checked off all the boxes; good goaltending, savvy veterans, talented youngsters, and top notch coaching. They play up tempo hockey and are always worth watching. The Ducks face a visiting Mammoth team that got off to a hot start this season, before cooling off recently. Yes, there is room enough for both these squads in the playoffs this upcoming April, though it will be a battle right down to the wire.

Tuesday, November 18th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
New York Rangers at Vegas Golden Knights

The road warriors are on the Strip tonight, clashing with a Golden Knights team that has certainly accumulated points since the season began, but haven’t played up to their full potential just yet. The visiting Rangers have been very strong away from MSG, while being historically goal challenged while playing in front of the home crowd.

Wednesday, November 19th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Edmonton Oilers at Washington Capitals

Connor McDavid vs. Alex Ovechkin looks good on a marquee, but it’s about much more than that. The Oilers are off to another patented underwhelming start to the season, and while they most likely will qualify for the post-season, teams cannot take it for granted anymore that their playoff ticket is punched just by showing up. The Capitals surprised pretty much everybody last season by finishing with 111 points; the highest total in the Eastern Conference, and second in the league behind only the Winnipeg Jets.  So far this season, Washington have been playing just over .500 hockey.

Thursday, November 20th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Dallas Stars at Vancouver Canucks

Can the Dallas Stars finally make it back to the Stanley Cup Final this June? Yes. They’re chock full of top notch talent. Will the Dallas Stars finally make it back to the Stanley Cup Final this June? Who knows??  Dallas are certainly one of the true battleship teams in the Western Conference, and it would be a shock if they missed the playoff cut. So, yeah, they’re once again in the mix. But what about the Canucks?  First off, can All-Star goalie Thatcher Demko please find a way to say healthy? Signed…every Canucks’ fan.  Second, will highly paid forward Elias Pettersson ever rediscover his home run swing? Signed…most hockey fans. Vancouver have been hovering at or near the .500 mark since the beginning of this season.

Friday, November 21st – 8:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Carolina Hurricanes at Winnipeg Jets

A possible 2026 Stanley Cup Final preview. The old New England Whalers against the former Atlanta Thrashers. Okay, back to the present. Both of these teams probably should have played in a Cup Final in recent years, but something always gets in the way. For the Canes, it’s just better teams. Carolina is a well-balanced, well coached side, but always come up just a big short of getting the invite to the big dance.  For the Jets, it’s the road. They just can’t win on the road during the post-season. Obviously that has to change this spring. Will both these teams be in the playoffs come this April?  Don’t bet against it.
