Former First Lady Michelle Obama returned to the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast, sitting down with Conan once more to discuss her new book, The Light We Carry, as well as how she developed tools to deal with anxiety, the importance of working with one’s hands, and preparing for the empty nest.
In an Instagram post, Conan wrote, “Hear me chat with Michelle Obama about insecurity, parenting, and ‘that guy’ @barackobama.”

During the episode, Michelle and Conan bond over their shared love of crafts — for Michelle it’s knitting, for Conan it’s building model airplanes — as a way to combat anxiety. Michelle is looking forward to her book tour for The Light We Carry and seeing people in person after so long. They also share memories of the time the Obamas brought Conan overseas as a comedy act for American troops, and Michelle gives Conan pointers on what it’s like to be an empty nester, with Malia and Sasha Obama both now in their twenties and Conan’s children, Neve and Beckett O’Brien, in their late teens.
