Toronto Maple Leafs at Edmonton Oilers

You know the building will be well populated by Leafs fans this evening, so it’s up to the Oiler faithful to show up and be heard.  Be loud. And they’ll be heard, as Edmonton is off to a rip-roaring start. Better team defensive play, reliable goaltending, and the Big Names are scoring (McDavid, Draisaitl, and Bouchard). The Captain is off to a blistering start, including the most assists by a player after only ten games. On the Toronto side, their Captain is also off to a blistering start, as it appears that Auston Matthews is over whatever had been ailing him the past season or so.

Montreal Canadiens at Winnipeg Jets

We head to the Great Outdoors for this early evening matchup between the Canadiens and Jets.  And plenty of Habs fans live in Winnipeg, so it’s up to the Jet faithful to show up and be heard. The Jets got off to an impressive start, but have played alright hockey since then.  The young Canadiens have shot themselves in the skates a couple of times already this season, taking some dumb penalties, costing them valuable points in the jam-packed Atlantic Division. And hey, what’s up with goaltender Connor Hellebuyck?

Los Angeles Kings at New York Rangers

What a change from this time last year! A rip-roaring start for the Rangers, despite the season-long loss of star goaltender Igor Shesterkin. They’re actually winning games on home ice! Not a rip-roaring start for the Kings, who were the final NHL team to register a win this young season. But hey, ya gotta start somewhere.

Ottawa Senators at Vegas Golden Knights

A rip-roaring start to the season for both these clubs.  The visiting Senators were receiving good goaltending from Linus Ullmark, which has made all the difference for this team. Then he went down with an apparent injury late in the 5-1 win over Brady Tkachuk and the Florida Panthers last week. At the time of this writing, it was still up in the air regarding any news concerning his status. Suffice to say the Sens need Ullmark, who has put up impressive numbers so far this campaign. Vegas are off to another impressive start, battling with the red-hot Edmonton Oilers for top spot in the Pacific Division. Just like last season. Expect that battle to rage on until mid-April.

Wednesday, October 28th – 7:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Philadelphia Flyers at Washington Capitals

The final NHL go-around from all-time sniper Alex Ovechkin, as he looks to help drive his beloved Capitals deep into the post-season. Yeah, post-season. That dream didn’t appear to be happening for the hapless, grounded Flyers, who were the penultimate NHL club this season to pick up a win. Well, that one win seemed to get the competitive juices flowing, because the Flying P’s reeled off three wins in a row (at the time we sat down to type this), and are right back in the mix in the Eastern Conference.  Remember…it’s still early. Breathe deeply, and repeat.

Thursday, October 29th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings

The early return from injury for young superstar Connor Bedard is a big deal for the Blackhawks, for the NHL, and for those of us who have the Captain in the pool. Does that mean the rebuilding Chicago team will make a run for a playoff spot? They should be closer this season, after finishing 18 points of the final Western wildcard spot last season. Detroit? 10 years and counting…

Friday, October 30th – 8:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Seattle Kraken at Calgary Flames

Boy, do the Kraken love to play the Calgary Flames. Seattle took two early wins for the rebuilding Flames very early this season, by identical scores of 6-1. Contrary to popular belief, the Emerald Boys also have racked up some wins against teams other than Calgary. They beat Washington, Philadelphia and Detroit twice, for good measure. Okay, not exactly a murderer’s row of contenders, mind you, but two points is two points.
