Juneteenth is the longest-running celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, two and half years after the delivery of the Emancipation Proclamation, Black people in Texas learned that they were freed by executive decree. The observance of June 19 as the African American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.
