We are saddened to report that legendary pianist, singer, and songwriter Fats Domino has died.
Antoine “Fats” Domino Jr. was born in New Orleans on February 26, 1928. His brother-in-law, jazz guitarist Harrison Verrett, taught him to play the piano. Domino garnered national attention with his first rock ‘n’ roll recording, ‘The Fat Man,’ in 1949 for Imperial Records. It sold one million copies by 1953.
Domino was one of the biggest stars in rock ‘n’ roll, uniting black and white audiences and influencing future musicians. In 1969, Elvis Presley deemed Fats Domino the “Real King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” during a press conference following Presley’s first concert in Las Vegas.
He continued to reside in New Orleans in a home large enough to fit his 13 children. Because of his overwhelming influence, Fats Domino was one of the first members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, inducted with the inaugural class in 1986.
