Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died on Friday, September 18, due to complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas, the Supreme Court announced. She was 87.

The trailblazing lawyer and feminist icon, who was affectionately dubbed the “Notorious RBG,” spent nearly 40 years as a judge, as well as more than 27 years on the nation’s highest court. Over the past several years, Ginsburg had served as the most senior member of the Supreme Court’s liberal wing, delivering progressive votes on the most divisive social issues of the day, such as abortion rights, same-sex marriage, voting rights, immigration, health care, and affirmative action.
