Seattle Kraken at Edmonton Oilers

So the Oilers lost another season opener to the Canucks. That’s the Vancouver Canucks, only the worst team last season in the entire National Hockey League. There are hopes for that young squad, who are looking to slowly work their way back to playoff relevance. But what about the Oilers? Controversial new head coach (Mike Babcock…who said after the opening night loss that there’s still a lot of work to be done), some new players, and apparently a new attitude. That all added up to a 6-5 OT loss to the rebuilding Canucks, and let’s be honest here…goaltender Tristen Jarry was not good. He has to play better in order for this team to have any serious shot at a championship. Or hope that Devon Levi can realize his promise. Or trade for an undisputed Number One goalie.  Or…or…or… So what about the Kraken?  It remains to be seen. They’ve been in the league for a bit now, and except for a playoff spot in their second season, the boys from Coffee Town have been largely decaffeinated…sorry, had to.  Seattle hockey fans want something to cheer about.

Vegas Golden Knights at Vancouver Canucks

So the Canucks upended the Oilers again on opening night. Good stuff. But it would be a major stretch to suggest this sets up the team for a run at a 2027 playoff spot.  But Vancouver wasn’t built in a day. Vegas, on the other hand, very clearly was. And after dismantling the still-rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks 5-2 on Opening Night, last year’s Stanley Cup Finalists are looking to take that one extra step. And it’s a doozy. Get back to the Cup Final, and win it all. Again. If they get the goaltending, they have the team to do it. But we say that about all the contending teams.

San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars

Here Comes The Sharks! Everybody’s favourite second team. Darlings of the hockey media. The Next Ones. And all that jazz.  That honeymoon period only lasts for so long before people begin to ask what’s going on. San Jose missed the Western Conference playoff cut by a mere four points last season. This time around, the pressure is on to take the next step, or two.  And why not?  This is a young, talented team. Nobody except maybe S.J. Sharkie is expecting this team to win the Stanley Cup this June, but seeing them in the Final in 2029, or 2030, suddenly isn’t out of the question.  Yawn, reply the Dallas Stars. Been there.  And we didn’t win the Cup. And they’ve been knocking on the door ever since, though this past April the Stars were unceremoniously booted out in the first round (in six games) by the Minnesota Wild. The guys who have the keys to the old apartment.

Carolina Hurricanes at Montreal Canadiens

The defending Stanley Cup Champions are in Montreal this evening for a rematch of the 2026 Eastern Conference Final.  The Canes took that one easily, smothering the Canadiens’ attack. So has Montreal learned anything from domination?  Probably, but knowing something and doing something about it are often two very different things. Starting netminder Jakub Dobas looked good in the 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs to begin the season. Carolina dropped their opener 1-0 to the visiting Florida Panthers on an overtime goal with five seconds remaining on the clock.

Wednesday, October 7th – 7:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Colorado Avalanche at Winnipeg Jets

Predictions are always fun, and almost always useless. For instance, many had this matchup tonight as the 2026 Western Conference Final, or at least a strong second-round matchup. Didn’t work out that way, as the wayward Jets couldn’t get off the ground and ended up missing the playoffs. While the Avalanche are a safe pick to challenge for the Stanley Cup beginning this April, will they once again finish in the top spot in the top-heavy Central Division? And what becomes of the broken-hearted?  That doesn’t just mean the Jets; it also means All-Star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck, who, as we write this, remains at home.

Thursday, October 8th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Philadelphia Flyers at Ottawa Senators

The two points up for grabs tonight could very well help determine which teams grab an Eastern Conference wildcard spot this season. Philadelphia finished third in the Metropolitan Division in 2025-26, but with most observers expecting a stronger campaign from the Washington Capitals, a wildcard invite might be the only way back to the postseason for Philly. It didn’t help matters that the Flyers were bombed 7-0 by the cross-state Pittsburgh Penguins in their opening game. Ottawa? No Brady Tkachuk, but that’s a good thing in the sense that the team has moved on from the soap opera. That’s what they tell us.  Now they have to prove they were more than just a one-man team. And they are! This roster is good enough to compete for a playoff spot, after grabbing one of the two Eastern wildcard slots this past season. If anything, the Sens did alright without Brady in the lineup.  Brady who?

Friday, October 9th – 8:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Anaheim Ducks at Winnipeg Jets

Yeah, the Ducks boast some pretty impressive young talent on their roster, but it cost them a pretty penny. No problem, as that’s how league economics/revenues are trending. But do they have enough depth on this roster to once again make the postseason?  Anaheim lost a number of veterans during the summer, in large part due to salary cap challenges from having all that pretty impressive young talent.
