The San Jose Sharks head to Montreal + more NHL Games of the Week
Saturday, March 14th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 167
San Jose Sharks at Montreal Canadiens
Back on March 3rd, these two up-and-coming young teams met up in San Jose, and it was goals-a-plenty as the Sharks prevailed 7-5. Both squads have their sights set on postseason berths, though only Montreal has been on the plus side of that ledger for the past few months. The Sharks are right there, which is quite the testament to the development of this team, which finished dead last in the 32-team NHL just a year ago. And any game with Lane Hutson, Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Michael Misa, Will Smith, and certainly Mackin Celebrini is well worth your time.
Sunday, March 15th – 8:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Nashville Predators at Edmonton Oilers
With all the understandable talk about the Sabres, and Red Wings, and Sharks…what about the Nashville Predators? A huge disappointment last season, the Preds have hung around the wildcard picture in the wild, wild West, and are looking for the two points tonight to advance that cause. They visit an Oilers team that has been all over the road this season, but is expected to make the playoff cut in mid-April. The question is, where will Edmonton finish in the standings, and can they once again get back to the Stanley Cup Final? Some nights they look unstoppable, other nights…
Monday, March 16th – 9:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Pittsburgh Penguins at Colorado Avalanche
Okay, they don’t often score on the power play, and some are still slightly concerned about their goaltending, but everything else appears to be coming up roses for the Avalanche. They snagged impact forward Nazim Kadri at the recent NHL trade deadline, returning the veteran to the fold. Colorado will most likely finish first in the top-heavy Central Division; they’ll be judged on how they do in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As for the surprising Penguins, they’re surprising. Most picked them to be well below the playoff line this season. Instead, the heady mix of crafty, effective veterans and enthusiastic, talented youngers have the Pens fighting for second spot in the Metropolitan Division.
Tuesday, March 17th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Buffalo Sabres at Vegas Golden Knights
Yes, the Buffalo Sabres are in the midst of a battle for first place in the Atlantic Division, the toughest overall division in the NHL this season. Tonight they visit an old friend. Jack Eichel and his Golden Knights haven’t been all that golden so far this season, though it’s a bit of a stretch to suggest they won’t make the playoffs. But they don’t look like the powerhouse many expected them to be.
Wednesday, March 18th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Philadelphia Flyers at Anaheim Ducks
It’ll (most likely) be try again next year for the Flyers. Not the same story for the Ducks, who are in a battle with Vegas and Edmonton for the Pacific Division crown. Not a battle for a wild card spot, a battle for first place. Not too shabby of a season for an impressive Anaheim team, who missed the playoff cut by 16 points in 2024-25.
Thursday, March 19th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Montreal Canadiens at Detroit Red Wings
This would make for an entertaining first-round playoff matchup, which very well could happen in the choppy waters of the Atlantic Division. Montreal were in the dance last year, though the Washington Capitals took care of them in short order in the first round. At least the roster gained playoff experience. The same can’t be said for the majority of the Red Wings, as the franchise hasn’t played past the regular season in almost a decade. Detroit have enjoyed reliable goaltending, and all-around top-notch play from their roster, and is all set to end the playoff participation drought.
Friday, March 20th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Carolina Hurricanes at Toronto Maple Leafs
Two teams headed in completely opposite directions this season. The Hurricanes once again look poised to take the Metropolitan Division, but they will (once again) ultimately be judged by how far they advance in the playoffs. And with the East being wide open this season, it presents a great opportunity to represent the Conference in the Stanley Cup Final. As for the Maple Leafs, for a team that finished first overall in the Atlantic Division 12 months ago, and had the fourth-best record in the entire league, this has been a season to forget. Can they pivot and rebound next season, like we’ve recently witnessed from other teams? It’ll take some major reconstructive work to the roster, but in the East, it’s not a crazy suggestion.
