Saturday, October 17th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Buffalo Sabres at Montreal Canadiens
Neither team is off to the hot start they’d hoped for. Last Tuesday, during Frozen Frenzy (when all 32 NHL teams were in action), the Habs edged the Sabres 4-3 in the shootout, also in Montreal. The recent injury to stud defenceman Rasmus Dahlin has hurt Buffalo, but they hope to have their captain back soon, and he may be back by the time you read this. Montreal goaltending prospect Jacob Fowler was called up to the big club after netminder Sam Montembeault was injured.
Sunday, October 18th – 8:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Carolina Hurricanes at Calgary Flames
Everybody knew it would be a rough road for the kids from Cowtown, but so far it’s been rougher than anticipated. And now the defending Stanley Cup Champions come to town. The Flames did pick up their first win of the young season during the recent Frozen Frenzy, dropping the hometown Ducks 4-2. The Hurricanes are off to another impressive start, and most hockey observers expect Carolina to take home the regular season Metropolitan Division crown.
Monday, October 19th – 7:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
San Jose Sharks at Toronto Maple Leafs
The up-and-coming young Sharks visit the reconstituted and not-so-young Maple Leafs. Well, to a degree. Young guns Easton Cowen and 2026 first-overall pick Gavin McKenna have both played well out of the gate. Free agent acquisition Sergei Bobrovsky has stood tall in the Toronto net. The big question for both teams this season concerns the postseason. Which doesn’t get going until mid-April. Will either one (or both) of these teams make the playoff cut?
Tuesday, October 20th – 9:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 167
Minnesota Wild at Edmonton Oilers
Nice start for the Oilers, who have become accustomed to slow starts to the season. Tonight, Edmonton takes on a Minnesota squad that will provide them with a tougher test than the Oilers went through for their first half dozen games. Wild sniper Kirill Kaprizov is off to another eye-popping start lighting the lamp. And what more can be said about Connor McDavid? You choose the superlatives.
Wednesday, October 21st – 7:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Florida Panthers at Ottawa Senators
Last Tuesday, Brady Tkachuk exploded for a natural hat-trick in a game against the Blue Jackets (all of the goals assisted by his brother Matthew). And finally…tonight…Brady Tkachuk returns to Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He faces his old team after being traded away during the Summer of Discontent for a number of notable NHL players. How will he be greeted? Probably with boos, though the obligatory Tribute Video will elicit some applause, deservedly so for all the fine seasons the younger Tkachuk spent in Bytown. As for the game, the topsy-turvy Atlantic Division will be a battle all year long, so check the emotions at the gate, and get the two points. That goes for both teams. But hockey gloves may litter the ice at some point tonight.
Thursday, October 22nd – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks
The playoffs don’t look likely this spring for either club, though that was expected of the rebuilding Canucks. The Red Wings? 10 years, and counting, since they last played in the postseason. If Detroit truly entertains notions of playing past mid-April, then the two points available tonight are a must.
Friday, October 23rd – 9:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Tampa Bay Lightning at Colorado Avalanche
Could be an entertaining Stanley Cup Final eight months from now. But eight months is a long time in the life of the National Hockey League, and so much can suddenly happen (just ask the New York Rangers), so here’s an opportunity to enjoy two top teams meeting up on ice on a Friday in late October.
