Friday, March 8, is the NHL trade deadline, but there’s still action to be had leading up to it. Hear all the coverage, including trade deadline updates, on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio (Channel 91).
After missing the NHL post-season for the past seven seasons, it appears the Detroit Red Wings are headed back to the playoffs…this season. The Red Wings haven’t been in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2016 and haven’t won a playoff series since defeating the Anaheim Ducks in seven games back in 2013. It’s not a sure thing, but Detroit have been playing solid hockey for months now, and tonight tangle with a ‘Cats squad that have eyes on top spot in the Atlantic Division.
Can the Penguins grab a 2024 playoff spot? They’ve got their work cut out for them. Even if they make the cut, Pittsburgh hasn’t won a post-season round since downing the Flyers in six games back in 2018. Tonight, the Penguins face an Oilers team that have rebounded from a terrible start to the 2023-24 campaign and are now in a battle for second, or third, or a wildcard slot in the Pacific Division.
It must almost be spring because seeing the Bruins and Maple Leafs on the same sheet of ice brings back playoff memories for many fans. Most of those memories are pleasant for Bruins fans but somewhat painful for those who follow the Maple Leafs. These two Original Six rivals could face each other again in the opening round of the playoffs a mere seven weeks from now.
Tuesday, March 5th – 10:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Vancouver Canucks at Los Angeles Kings
While the Canucks’ level of compete has not pleased the head coach recently…nor the fans…Vancouver would have to fall hard in order to fall out of first place in the Pacific Division. This evening, they visit a Kings’ team that recently got through their own rough spot, and are in contention for second place, or third, or a wildcard, in the Western Conference.
This rematch of the 2007 Stanley Cup Final (won by the Ducks) isn’t about the playoffs this time. The Senators have been a disappointment in the Atlantic Division, and they will be watched with interest this upcoming off-season to see what changes they affect. The Ducks are still developing and most likely will be for the next couple of campaigns.
Can the Golden Knights catch the Canucks for top spot in the Pacific Division? Yes, they can. Will they catch the Canucks for top spot in the Pacific Division? Less likely. What Vegas can do is solidify their hold on second place, thus guaranteeing themselves home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs against the Edmonton Oilers or the Los Angeles Kings.
Today at 3 pm Eastern (12 noon Pacific) is the NHL trade deadline, and most hockey observers expect a lot of player movement, either on this date or on the days leading up to March 8th. Will that include a blockbuster name or two? SiriusXM NHL Network Radio Channel 91 has you covered, beginning with Hockey This Morning at 7 am Eastern (4 am Pacific).
