Early Monday morning the news came out that David Bowie had passed away after an 18 month battle with cancer, just days after his 69th birthday and the release of his 25th studio album, Blackstar. The album, with its surreal videos for the title track and Lazarus, may have pointed the way towards Bowie’s imminent passing, but the truth is, nobody would have wanted to ever consider a world without the Thin White Duke. Amazingly, Bowie was able to make the final act of his life his own.
Tony Visconti, Bowie’s longtime friend and producer, wrote on Facebook this morning, “He always did what he wanted to do. And he wanted to do it his way and he wanted to do it the best way. His death was no different from his life – a work of Art. He made Blackstar for us, his parting gift. I knew for a year this was the way it would be. I wasn’t, however, prepared for it. He was an extraordinary man, full of love and life. He will always be with us. For now, it is appropriate to cry.”
In a career that lasted 6 decades, everyone is bound to have their own favourite David Bowie. He was an artist in the truest sense of the word, unwilling to be pigeonholed into one sound or style. Rather, Bowie created his own almost every time he went into the studio. On that note, while we mourn the loss of one of pop culture’s most brilliant artists, we also celebrate his memory with some of our favourite Bowie moments.
