Weaves, Fake Shark are Ones to Watch on The Verge

Weaves – “Internet Dreams”

Toronto’s Weaves features Jasmyn Burke as the lead singer and a co-founder of the band. When speaking about their new single “Internet Tears” she said…

“I was watching something on the Internet that made me cry and started thinking about how ridiculous and funny and peculiar it is that we can sit alone staring at a screen and feel such strong feelings of happiness or sadness or anger while just browsing. It’s like imposed feelings or something. Maybe you can relate.”

Fake Shark- “Invincible”

Vancouver’s Fake Shark just dropped “Invincible”, their first track since last year’s Walking Through a Fantasy. Lead singer Kevvy said, “Invincible” is about how we’ve all been to hell and back together, been hit with everything this industry can throw at us and we keep coming back.”

Close Talker – “Carefully in the Dark”

“Carefully in the Dark” comes from the new album from Saskatoon’s Close Talker. Eleven tracks in length, How Do We Stay Here? marks the band’s follow-up to 2017’s Lens. Choosing to self-produce allowed the band to hold this album close to their chest while it developed organically over the course of 2018 while they recorded in Saskatoon.

Little Scream – “One Lost”

Little Scream just dropped her new record Speed Queen on Columbus Day and Canadian Thanksgiving. Little Scream said…”I wanted to explain why I chose to mention the indigenous territories that Speed Queen was recorded on. I am fortunate enough to live in a community where land acknowledgements have become so common that there is skepticism about their value. Many indigenous people point out that they let settler culture off the hook by offering a means of lip service without action. I take this to heart. There is a difference between truth and reconciliation. And mentioning a truth is far from reconciling it.”

Bad Child- “Pretty Girls”

Toronto-based, self-taught singer-songwriter Bad Child has just dropped “Pretty Girls,” the first track from their debut album Sign Up. With a bouncing synth bass and trap drum pattern, this song has definitely earned its spot on Ones to Watch…
