It’s a new season of NHL action, and you can get complete coverage 24/7 on SiriusXM NHL Network Radio.
What to expect tonight after the Canucks ran all over the Oilers this past Wednesday en route to an 8-1 victory in Vancouver? Yes, it’s only one game, but what a game for Brock Boeser, who had four goals, and Elias Pettersen, who put up four points. How does Edmonton respond, and who is their starting goaltender?
The 1992 expansion cousins meet up tonight in Ottawa, with both teams eyeing a playoff spot in the tough Atlantic Division. The Senators dropped their opening game 5-3 in Carolina against a Hurricanes team many expect to lead the Eastern Conference this regular season. The Lightning bowed out in the first round of the playoffs this past spring and will have to contend with life without All-Star goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy for the foreseeable future due to injury.
Much heralded rookie forward Connor Bedard and the rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks are in Toronto tonight to clash with a Maple Leafs’ squad that underwent some major changes this off-season in an attempt to finally go deep in the playoffs. Bedard picked up an assist in his first NHL game and scored the lone Chicago goal in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins.
After winning the Stanley Cup in 2022, the Avalanche were unceremoniously bounced from the first round (in 7 games) in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs by these very same Seattle Kraken. The two points up for grabs tonight are the real motivation (not revenge) as the race for playoff spots in the Western Conference is going to be tight, with many expecting five teams from the Pacific Division to make the post-season cut.
Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and newly acquired Erik Karlsson take the show on the road to Michigan this evening as they tangle with the Red Wings. Are the Penguins a playoff team this time around, after missing out on the springtime fun by a single point this past April? Will Detroit improve upon the 80 points they racked up last season, which left them 12 points back of the final playoff slot in the Eastern Conference?
The defending Stanley Cup Champions roll into Winnipeg this evening for a game against a Jets team that recently locked up All-Star goaltender Connor Hellebuyck and forward Mark Scheifele to long-term contracts. That surprised a number of hockey observers, but it’s a clear signal that the Jets intend to make another run at a Western Conference playoff spot this season.
Once upon a time, the question around the New Jersey Devils was whether they could produce enough offence. That’s not in question anymore, as the young guns from the Garden State are one of the league’s most exciting teams. That is a question for the Islanders, who ranked 23rd in league goal scoring in 2022-23 and weren’t able to address that shortcoming in the off-season.
