Mick Kern looks at some of the must-hear MLB games this week.
The Bruins have enjoyed a sizzling hot start to the season (9-1 in their first 10 games), while the Maple Leafs have underachieved against lesser teams to begin their season, though they are coming off a 5-2 win over the Flyers. Tonight, they face off against each other in Toronto, where the pressure to succeed is always dialled up.
Another Original Six matchup, as the Rangers play host to an up-and-coming Red Wings team that is looking to improve on the 74 points they racked up last season. New York finished with 110 points last year; so far this campaign they are already in the thick of the race for first place in the Metropolitan Division.
The 1972 expansion cousins clash tonight on Long Island, as the Flames finally take to the road after playing at home for nine of their first ten games. After missing the playoff cut last season by 16 points, the Islanders are looking to get off to a better start this season and have picked up 12 points in their first 10 games this time around.
It’s proven tougher to take on the Kraken so far in this their sophomore season. Seattle recently beat the Calgary Flames, in Calgary, 5-4. The Predators got off to a red-hot start over in Europe with a couple of wins over the Sharks, but since returning to North America, have not had as easy a time.
A meeting of two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, with both clubs off to good starts to the season. The Canes have enjoyed life away from home in October, while the Panthers have enjoyed life at home during October. Should be a good one.
The return of former Sabres’ forward Jack Eichel, as the red-hot Golden Knights clash with the surprisingly effective Sabres. Vegas fell short of the playoffs by only 3 points last season and have vaulted to the top of the Pacific Division standings after 10 games. Buffalo looks like a good bet to improve on the 75 points they picked up last year.
The Penguins at Maple Leafs meet up in Toronto on Remembrance Day in Canada (Veteran’s Day in the United States). While the Leafs have been uneven in their play to begin the season, Pittsburgh has suddenly found themselves in a lengthy losing streak. Two teams looking for two points early in the season.
