The defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning and Columbus Blue Jackets renew hostilities. These two teams played a memorable 5 overtime playoff game back in the summer, with the Lightning emerging with the win in the game, and the series.
The New York Rangers are on the road to face Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins this evening. A lot is expected of the young Rangers this season, but can they make the playoffs in the group of death known as the East Division? Many are asking the same question of the Penguins.
The surprising Ottawa Senators are in Vancouver to tangle with the Canucks, the only game in the league this evening. Most prognosticators expected the Sens to finish at the bottom of the North Division, and while that may still happen, they’ve already served notice that they will not be an easy team to play against.
The resurgent Buffalo Sabres tonight play host to the New York Rangers. Most pre-season pick had both of these squads finishing out of the playoff race in the tough East Division, so two points for a win will go a long way to proving that prediction wrong.
The Canucks and Senators go at it again this evening in Vancouver, as part of the back-to-backs that teams will grow accustomed to this season. Vancouver has their sights set on a playoff spot in the North Division, and so do the upstart Senators.
The Maple Leafs and Oilers renew hostilities this evening in Edmonton. The first time they met up this season, the Oil emerged with a tight 3-1 win, in a game that did not produce the goal-scoring fireworks most of us anticipated.
8 pm Eastern puck drop for the Columbus Blue Jackets in Chicago, to face a rebuilding Blackhawks team. Patrick Kane is still playing at a Hall of Fame pace, so the Jackets will have to keep an eye on him.
