SiriusXM The Verge presents the Top 40 Songs of 2019
It’s hard to believe that not only is it nearly the end of another year but it’s the end of a decade. 2019 was a wild year for everyone. Whether you’ve spent it thinking about the political landscape, climate change, or Baby Yoda, it was a challenging year of ups and downs. Before we can gaze optimistically into the future of 2020, we must first reflect on the brilliant music that 2019 has provided us here at The Verge.
This year we saw a lot of big moves from both new bands and groups we have known and loved for years. We saw Alexisonfire make the comeback that we had all been yearning for over a decade with “Complicit”, which earned its rightful spot on the list this year.
Speaking of the St. Catherine’s Ontario outfit, AOF alumni Dallas Green is duking it out for the top three spots in our list for the second year in a row. 2019 was a very busy year for Green with the release of his record A Pill for Loneliness.
The Beaches had a huge 2019. Not only did they release the phenomenal EP The Professional, but they also played the opening show of the CFL Grey Cup this year. Continuing to woo us with their glam-garage sound, The Beaches have earned two spots on our list this year. This was no easy task considering only one other band managed to do that this year – PIP.
PUP released the wildly entertaining album Morbid Stuff. With tracks like “Kids”, “See You at Your Funeral” and “Sibling Rivalry” it’s no wonder this Toronto punk band was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize.
2019 also blessed us with new albums from Tegan and Sara, Broken Social Scene, Metric, and Mac DeMarco. There was such an abundance of tunes this year that we were spoiled for choices to build this list.
