The Dog Days of August get going this Saturday, with the Cards and the Jays meeting up in Toronto. The Blue Jays just cannot get anything going in the AL East, and as a result, have been languishing in the basement of that division for the better part of the past few months. St. Louis is faring a bit better, sitting closer to an NL wildcard spot than Toronto is to the American League equivalent.

Chicago White Sox at Tampa Bay Rays
Who saw this coming, as this game this afternoon is an early August meeting of two division leaders? The surprising White Sox (who on Wednesday, July 29th engineered an impressive extra-inning, come-from-behind 6-5 win over the visiting New York Yankees) continue to be at or near the top of the American League Central standings. The Rays benefited from that Yankees’ blown lead, as Tampa are battling New York for the top spot in the AL East. 2026 American League Championship Series preview?

Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
Two iconic franchises meet up at iconic Wrigley Field. The defending World Series Champion Dodgers are once again the class of the National League, with only the Milwaukee Brewers offering any real competition. Okay, also the Atlanta Braves. What about the Cubs? They’re playing good baseball four months into the 2026 regular season, but can’t seem to catch the Brewers. A National League wildcard invite should be in the mail for Chicago this autumn.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers
A great day for a birthday party at the ballpark, as the NL Central Division-leading Brewers welcome in the Pirates. We know how good the Brew Crew have been so far. Pittsburgh have been flirting with .500, which is good enough to keep their name in the conversation for a possible National League wildcard spot… remember, the Cubs are having one mailed to them this autumn.
Wednesday, August 5th – 2:10 pm Eastern
Toronto Blue Jays at Houston Astros
George Springer and the Blue Jays are back in Houston to tangle with the Astros. The home team has been going back-and-forth above, then below, the .500 mark. But in this crazy season, that’s good enough to contemplate either a wildcard spot AND first place in the mediocre American League West.

New York Mets at Cleveland Guardians
Only the Guardians are providing any credible opposition to the surprising Chicago White Sox in the topsy-turvy American League Central division. They’re staying close to both the Chisox and the AL wildcard snail race. So this is a big series as the calendar gets deeper into August. The Mets? Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies
Memories of the 1993 World Series will always be top-of-mind when these two teams hook up. This time around, it’s the Phillies who are closest to the playoffs this autumn. They most likely won’t catch the Atlanta Braves in the National League East, but a wildcard invite might be mailed to their house for this autumn…no, not the one being mailed to the Cubs.
