Atlanta Braves at New York Yankees

With infielder Luis Garcia Jr. now on the roster following a swap with the Washington Nationals, the hometown Yankees look to improve their lot in the American League East. New York sent four pitching prospects to the Nats ahead of last week’s MLB trade deadline. The visiting Braves picked up outfielder Lane Thomas in a four-player swap with the Royals. Atlanta holds on to first place in the NL East, ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies.

Toronto Blue Jays at Philadelphia Phillies

Those Phillies take on the Blue Jays this afternoon in Philly. The Jays recently picked up “Canadian” pitcher Jameson Taillon from the Chicago Cubs. Is there still time to steal an American League wildcard spot? Sure, but it’ll be that much more difficult a feat to pull off after trading starting pitcher Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs for prospects. Outfielder Dalton Varsho was shipped to the Houston Astros, and his first game in his new threads was against the Blue Jays. Toronto also said goodbye to risk/reward closer Jeff Hoffman, who will now drive fans of the Minnesota Twins nuts. As for Philadelphia, they picked up outfielder Kameron Misner from the Royals about a week before the trade deadline.

Monday, August 10th – 7:07 pm Eastern
Boston Red Sox at Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays are at home for a big four-game series with the Red Sox. After a painfully slow start, which cost most of the Boston coaching staff their jobs, the Sox have climbed back to respectability in the American League East, and aren’t that far behind the Yankees and the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Boston recently swept the powerhouse Dodgers in Los Angeles. And the red-hot Red Sox added catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles. The three-time All-Star is currently recovering from a wrist injury.

Tuesday, August 11th – 6:40 pm Eastern
Cleveland Guardians at Detroit Tigers

Goodbye Tarik Skubal. We hardly knew ya. Actually, we knew you quite well, the winner of the past two Cy Young Awards for pitching excellence in the entire American League. The now-former Tiger ended up being traded just before the MLB trade deadline to? Any guesses? Of course…the defending World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. The rich just keep getting richer. Skubal joins an already impressive LA staff, who look as though they already have the National League West division sewn up. Cleveland? They’re staying close, in the AL Central, to the front-running Chicago White Sox…but look out for the Minnesota Twins. The Guardians added a bunch of players at the deadline, including first baseman Nathaniel Lowe and All-Star starting pitcher Foster Griffin.

Wednesday, August 12th – 7:40 pm Eastern
Cincinnati Reds at Chicago White Sox

Those surprising White Sox continue their quest for an unlikely post-season berth when they play host to the Reds on this Wednesday evening. Chicago sent four players to the Seattle Mariners on August 1st and received right-handed pitcher Luis Castillo in return. The Mariners’ motivation was as much about clearing salary as it was about picking up prospects. The M’s are still alive in both the AL West pennant race and the AL Wild Card chase because of the overall mediocrity of the league this year. The visiting Reds are dead-in-the-water, sinking to last place in the competitive NL Central. Their less-than-impressive win/loss record would have them within spitting distance in the AL West.

Thursday, August 13th – 10:10 pm Eastern
Milwaukee Brewers at Los Angeles Dodgers

Wouldn’t this make for a wonderful National League Championship Series? Both teams sit atop their respective divisions, and both teams went big-game hunting at the recent MLB trade deadline. The Dodgers snared left-hander Tarik Skubal, probably the biggest prize in baseball. Milwaukee made a move in mid-July, acquiring outfielder Lance McCullers Jr. courtesy of the Houston Astros.

Friday, August 14th – 7:15 pm Eastern
New York Yankees at Toronto Blue Jays

Always a good time when the Yankees invade Toronto. This time around, the Yanks are looking to move on up the standings in the AL East, and keep the hard-charging third-place Boston Red Sox at bay. And slugger Aaron Judge may not be all that far away from returning to the Bronx Bombers’ lineup. The Blue Jays’ magical 2025 playoff run is now a pleasant, distant memory, and while not officially eliminated, many are turning their focus to 2027 and whether the Jays can climb back into the race next season. That appears to be the motivation behind many of their moves at the recent MLB Trade Deadline.
