Vegas and Buffalo face off and more NHL Games of the Week
Saturday, February 28th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Ottawa Senators at Toronto Maple Leafs
The Battle of Ontario adds another chapter this evening, as both the Sens and Leafs are fighting to make the playoffs in the tough Atlantic Division. Toronto has not lived up to expectations so far this season, but won three-in-a-row just before the Winter Olympics’ break. They did not get off to a good start on the season restart, falling 4-2 in Tampa to the Lightning. Ottawa was also playing well into the break, and look to pick up where they left off.
Sunday, March 1st – 4:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Winnipeg Jets at San Jose Sharks
A tale of two teams headed in different directions. After leading the NHL during the regular season last year, the Jets have been a profound disappointment so far, and it would take more than a Joe Namath guarantee miracle to get Winnipeg back into the playoffs. The young Sharks have surprised practically everybody by still being in the Western Conference playoff race this late in the season. They may fall short, but the future indeed looks bright for the boys in teal.
Monday, March 2nd – 10:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Colorado Avalanche at Los Angeles Kings
How banged up is superstar forward Nathan MacKinnon? Time will tell, as the Avalanche’s cushy lead in the Central Division is not so comfortable anymore. Colorado won their first game back from the Winter Olympic break, downing Utah 4-2. Tonight, they visit a Kings’ squad that has not been anywhere close to impressive this season on home ice. The addition of sniper Artemi Panarin should help things in the goal-scoring department, but the loss of forward Kevin Fiala (hurt during the Olympics…gone for the season) will hurt an L.A. team scratching and clawing to get into the post-season.
Tuesday, March 3rd – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Vegas Golden Knights at Buffalo Sabres
Can we finally embrace the concept of the Buffalo Sabres being a playoff team? The Boys from Western New York haven’t played past Game #82 since 2011, and haven’t won a post-season series since going to the Eastern Conference Final in 2007. And the Sabres edged the Devils 2-1 in their first game back from the Winter Olympic break. Tonight, they take on a visiting Vegas side that’s looking to solidify its hold on the top spot in the underwhelming Pacific Division.
Wednesday, March 4th – 10:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 167
Carolina Hurricanes at Vancouver Canucks
Once again, the Carolina Hurricanes are quietly putting together an impressive regular season, and most likely will finish the campaign sitting on top of the Metropolitan Division. Meanwhile, the Canucks have been a mess for a while, and at the time of writing, were expected to make further personnel changes in hopes of rebuilding, reloading, and retooling for the future.
Thursday, March 5th – 9:30 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
New York Islanders at Los Angeles Kings
Can the Islanders hold on to the playoff spot in the Metropolitan Division, especially against the hard-charging Columbus Blue Jackets? Well, it doesn’t hurt that tonight they face a Kings’ team that has underperformed on home ice this season.
Friday, March 6th – 7:00 pm Eastern – SiriusXM 91
Florida Panthers at Detroit Red Wings
Can we finally embrace the concept of the Detroit Red Wings once again being a playoff team? That used to be a yearly occurrence, but the Big Red Machine haven’t played past Game #82 since 2016, and hasn’t won a post-season series since 2013. Right now, it doesn’t appear that the defending Stanley Cup Champions are headed back to the playoffs. If so, what a run…but they’re not dead yet!
