Arizona Diamondbacks at San Francisco Giants

60 years ago today, The Beatles played their final public concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. The Giants no longer play in the chilly confines beside the Bay, but Fab Four nostalgia is about all that SF has going for them on this late August afternoon.  The Giants are barely playing .400 ball, which has them languishing down in the basement with the equally woeful Colorado Rockies. On the other hand, the D-Backs are in the National League wildcard race. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays

The 1977 expansion cousins meet up by the shores of Lake Ontario, and this one matters. Both teams entered the final week of August playing underwater record-wise, but owing to the overall malaise this season in the ranks of the lesser teams, both the Mariners and Blue Jays are still very much afloat in the American League wildcard rowboat race.

Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs

Two of the NL Central powerhouses meet up at Wrigley on this final day of August. The Brewers have been a consistent machine this season, and enter September competing with the Dodgers for the best record in the Majors. The Cubs could still catch their northern rivals, but the most likely path to the post-season can be found down the wildcard path.

Toronto Blue Jays at Cleveland Guardians

It’s the home stretch month in baseball, as there’s only a month until the 2026 post-season gets underway. The Guardians are looking to track down the surprising Chicago White Sox for first place in the AL Central, while the visiting Blue Jays are looking to track down one of the AL wildcard spots.

Wednesday, September 2^nd – 7:40 pm Eastern
Detroit Tigers at Minnesota Twins

Both teams are under .500, yet both still have a legitimate shot at grabbing an American League wildcard invite. That’s the state of baseball in 2026.  The rich are very rich (hello Dodgers, Brewers, Braves, and Rays), there’s a definite middle class (hello Yankees, Cubs, Red Sox and Phillies), and apparently there’s everybody else. Including the Tigers and Twins. Who still have a shot at a wildcard spot.

Thursday, September 3^rd – 8:05 pm Eastern
Tampa Bay Rays at Texas Rangers

The Rays have looked good over the first five months of this season, and tonight visit a Rangers’ nine that has been going back-and-forth with the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners for top spot in the weakest division in the Majors, the AL West. Tampa have been sitting in first in the AL East for seemingly the majority of the season, with the Yankees and resurgent Red Sox just far enough behind them not to present too much of a concern. That doesn’t mean the Rays have this clinched by any means, but their odds look good.

Friday, September 4^th – 8:10 pm Eastern
Toronto Blue Jays at Kansas City Royals

These two teams met up in Toronto during the last week of August. The Blue Jays are in the middle of the dogfight for an American League wildcard entry, while the Royals (while on a hot streak late August) are deep enough in the AL Central cellar that it’s prudent to begin thinking about 2027.
