The Toronto Blue Jays are in the MLB wildcard race

Suddenly the Blue Jays find themselves neck deep in the American League wildcard race. Okay, it’s chiefly because it’s a rather mediocre race (in both leagues), but hey, who’s counting? Well, we are. There’s barely a month left in the 2026 MLB regular season, and after a good stretch of baseball since the trade deadline, Toronto stands a real chance of getting back to the post-season. This afternoon they face a Yankees’ nine that still have designs on first place in the American League East, though it’s proven tough to track down the front-running Tampa Bay Rays.

Sunday, August 23^rd – 2:10 pm Eastern
Athletics at Houston Astros

Talk about mediocre, we present to you the American League West. Where if you can cobble together a .500 record, you too could win the division. For months, either Texas or Seattle wore the yellow jersey, but recently the Astros soared into the lead. Mind you, it’s a tenuous hold on the crown. Houston welcomes in the nomadic Athletics, who are battling with the equally hapless Colorado Rockies for the honour of being the worst team in the Majors in 2026.

Monday, August 24^th – 6:40 pm Eastern
Boston Red Sox at Miami Marlins

Those Red Sox have had quite the run over the past couple of months, and that has catapulted them into the playoff race in the AL East. They won’t need sunscreen, as the Bosox most likely won’t catch the Rays, but they could catch the rival Yankees. As it stands here near the end of August, both AL teams could be wildcard participants six weeks from now. The Marlins? .500 baseball may be good enough in the AL West, but the Fish reside in the NL East, and that won’t get you much. Florida could still reel in a wildcard spot.

Tuesday, August 25^th – 7:07 pm Eastern
Kansas City Royals at Toronto Blue Jays

The Royals aren’t going anywhere this summer, so they‘ve been reduced to being spoilers. And they could do some damage this series, as the hometown Blue Jays have their sights set on one of the American League wildcard spots. They need wins! It’s been a long time since the Autumn of 1985, but some people still aren’t over a blown 3-1 series lead, and a Jim Sundberg windblown 3-run triple off the wall in Game Seven. Look it up.

Wednesday, August 26^th – 7:15 pm Eastern
Los Angeles Dodgers at Atlanta Braves

Two of the top teams in all of baseball meet up in Georgia. The Dodgers are the defending World Series Champions (look it up), and are once again running away with the National League West. The Braves are likewise dominating the National League East.  This would make for a great National League Championship Series…someone tell that to the Milwaukee Brewers.

Thursday, August 27^th – 7:10 pm Eastern
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets

Ahh, the Brewers. The best team in the National League? Tonight…one team is headed to the post-season. One team is headed to the off-season. Milwaukee is obviously the answer to question number one. But hold on before piling on the Mets. Meet the Mets.  They’ve been playing much better baseball recently, but a horrendous first half to the season pretty much means they’d have to play .800 ball in order to qualify for the post-season.

Seattle Mariners at Toronto Blue Jays

The Class of ’77 meet up in Toronto on this Friday evening. Can the Blue Jays grab an American League wildcard spot? Can the Mariners do the same, or maybe even climb into the lead in the less-than-stellar AL West? One can cut the drama with a butter knife.
